Moreover, in line with our main shareholder, the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec’s, regarding its commitment to fighting climate change, we aim to increase our low-carbon investments by 50% by the year 2020 and to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by the year 2025.

Operating a globally diverse portfolio of real estate assets comes with a great environmental responsibility. Ivanhoé Cambridge is committed to finding ways to continually mitigate the environmental impact that its buildings have and is always looking for opportunities to operate its assets as efficiently as possible. These efforts are yielding results, as the Company continues to see an improvement in overall utility consumption across its managed portfolio of properties.

Greenhouse gas emissions

Ivanhoé Cambridge continues to develop a long-term carbon strategy that is informed and responsive to the reality of climate change and to the economic implications of global carbon markets.

We have been gathering data on 11% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (since 2015) in our global portfolio since 20131. This data helps us to develop a solid understanding of our GHG performance. The GHG inventory identified in this report does not include any biogenic CO2.

In order to minimize our carbon footprint, Ivanhoé Cambridge prioritizes the use of videoconferencing.

*1 The method of calculating the GHG inventory is aligned with the World Ressoures Institute's (WRI) and World Business Council for Sustainable Development's (WDCSD) Greenhouse Gas Protocol / ISO 14064-1.

*2 GHG data is based on ownership percentage to align with the Caisse's carbon reduction targets and reporting methodology. To meet with standards, we report on emissions, as follows :

  • Scope 1 - direct emissions occurring within the soecified boundary
  • Scope 2 - emissions associated with energy used within the boundary but generated elsewhere
  • Scope 3 - emissions generated through other activites

For the first time this year, we are presenting a portfiolio-wide overview of our environmental performance using data collected throught the ESG Benchmark for Real Assets (GRESB) survey. This information applies to the period from January 1 to December 31, 2017.

Environmental certifications

Environmental certifications are increasingly valued by building owners and managers as a tool to promote the value and quality of the building’s construction and management, in addition to capitalizing on the expectations of various stakeholders, from tenants to employees to business partners.

Recognized certifications in our industry

(Building Owners and Managers Association Building Environmental Standards) is a national program created to address an industry need for realistic standards for energy and environmental performance of existing buildings based on accurate, independently verified information.
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a North American rating system for commercial buildings and homes to encourage sustainable building practices in matters of energy efficiency, water consumption, heating, use of local materials and reuse of surplus material.
WELL Building StandardMD
is an international certification program designed to promote occupant health and well-being. It focuses on seven categories of building performance: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind.
(Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is a British pioneer of environmental building certification. The certification is tailored for Europe and the Persian Gulf.
is a French designation for energy-efficient buildings aiming for a reduction of energy needs and consumption, in order to move towards positive energy buildings.
is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency tool destined to monitor, rate and optimize a building’s energy use. The certification has been recently introduced in Canada for commercial and institutional buildings.
(National Australian Built Environment Rating System) is a rating system managed by the Office of Environment and Heritage that measures energy efficiency, water usage, waste management and indoor environment quality of buildings. The results are weighted against similar buildings performance. The data is verified by a third-party before granting the rating certificate.
(Haute Qualité Environnementale) is a French certification based on best practices in terms of environmental and energy performance, based on a life-cycle analysis perspective.

Waste management

Another way to reduce our impact on the environment is to reduce, recycle, compost and reuse our non-hazardous solid waste.

All of the properties managed by Ivanhoé Cambridge are subject to an annual waste audit and have set a waste management target to be reached by the end of 2022.

Progression of diversion rate

In 20185, Ivanhoé Cambridge’s waste diversion rate was 59%, which represents an increase of 0.6% compared to 2017. Learn more about our portfolio's waste diversion performance in the CSR Performance Summary.
